Spanish Immersion Preschool Initiative

Purpose:

• To create an diverse community by providing high quality educational programs that honor diversity and encourage understanding through Spanish language immersion activities for Spanish speaking and English speaking children, their families, friends and neighbors
• To serve Hispanic children and their families, as well as encouraging
  English-speaking families to enroll their preschoolers so they can learn
  Spanish language and Latin American culture at an early age.

Benefits of learning Spanish as Preschoolers

The benefits of learning any language are profound. As well as gaining the ability to write and converse in a foreign tongue, you also learn about the structure of language, syntax and grammar, and how these interact with your own natural language.

Beyond the obvious benefits of culture and communication, however, recent research has presented a startling new theory: toddlers who learn Spanish as a second language appear to develop stronger minds. The same holds true for young students of other foreign languages, as well.

Toddlers who learn Spanish or another second language score better on a variety of psychological tests designed to evaluate their mental sophistication and dexterity. The Canadian Journal of Experimental Psychology recently published Bialystok’s findings on experimental tasks like the “Stroop test” (psychological test of mental attentional vitality and flexibility) and the “Simon task,” which require children to resolve contradictory perceptual information. Bilingual children consistently outperformed their monolingual peers.

We are pleased to announce the launch of our Spanish Immersion Initiative set to begin October 2oo8 in conjunction with Hispanic Heritage Month.

You can register and start your child throughout the year, based on availability.

The Center is open Monday through Friday, 7:30 am to  6:00 pm.
